Magnetic Fall Leaf Craft

Fall brings some of the most contrasting and beautiful images in nature. The different colors that leaves take, the eventual falling and the beautiful mosaics on the ground make fall an artist’s playground.

Equally importantly, fall plays such a huge role in keeping nature healthy by completing the circle of life for plants where the fallen leaves become nurturing food for the tree’s future growth.

Kangaroo Mother's Day Craft

Hop, hop, hop, goes the Kangaroo. Who doesn’t get wowed by their inimitable style of motion, box-fighting and the cute kid living in the mother’s pouch? Kids love Kangaroos!

A young Kangaroo is called Joey and when they are born, they are just the size of a peanut with no eyes & limbs! They live in their mother’s pouch drinking her milk as they develop their body and come out when they are a little older.

A Kangaroo mother is a doting one and takes care of as many of three multiple young ones at the same time.

Mothers are so special, right? They so lovingly carry babies in their bodies and give them the nourishment they need to develop. Even after the baby becomes bigger, a mother never stops caring and loving for their little ones.

Magnetic Squirrel and Acorn Fall Craft

Our house has a few large trees close to the balcony deck. The trees are home to a few squirrels and our toddler has come to adore their cute antics. Her favourite is when the squirrel grabs an acorn and nibbles away at it with her teeth and hands. So cute!

In fall, Acorns fall to the ground and squirrels pick them up burying them for use in the winter hibernation season. Often, not all the acorns get consumed leading to the birth of new oak trees in a few months. And, these natural cycles continue.

Paper Plate Wheel Calendar

I have been thinking of introducing calendar to my toddler for some time. Then I thought, why not do it as a craft activity?

Spent some time thinking about how one could represent the functionality of a calendar via craft and something interesting came from it. Making this craft turned out to be a real fun activity. In the process of crafting this, my toddler got to sort numbers and recognize words.

Most importantly I can now teach her about the relationship between date, day and month in a simple,  playful manner.

Here is the Paper Plate Wheel Calendar craft.

Interactive paper plate crafts are my favorite. The Solar Eclipse Craft we made after the total solar eclipse last year is such a great idea for preschooler and kindergarten kids.

I also love the interactive Paper Plate Bunny Craft we made around Easter to encourage the importance of chewing food well and eating healthy foods like carrots.

Theseinteractive crafts are fun for storytelling and introducing any concepts to little kids. Also, it makes great DIY toys for free play.

Father's Day Craft

Children have a special relationship with their father. While mothers are their emotional anchors, fathers are often their exploration anchors. Being around a father mostly means playtime or crazy fun activity time. All because fathers enjoy nothing else more than seeing a smile on their children's face.

So, this fathers day, we decided to craft one father-child activity special - the high toss. This is one of the most enduring moments for dads and tots. It was fun creating this craft and brought up happy memories for when our toddler was under 2 years and enjoyed soaring through the air only to land in the safe comfort of dad's arms.

So, what's your favorite dad-child activity?

Happy crafting!

Paper Plate Frog With Moving Tongue

Did you know there are over 5000 species of frogs? Or some frogs can jump 20 times their size or that some species like poison dart frogs are poisonous?

Frogs are fascinating animals for everyone but especially for children. They come in so many colors and have quite a few entertaining characteristics. They hop or jump everywhere. They are amphibious - meaning they can live on the land or in the water. That’s a fun ability!

Have you seen a frog eat? They have super long sticky tongues that they use to catch food such as flies or small insects. It’s quite something to watch them go about getting their belly full with just the tongue.

This movement is so fast often the prey doesn't have a chance to escape. A frog's tongue can snap back into its mouth within 15/100ths of a second.

After our popular Chomp Chomp Bunny Craft, we found that frog meal time actually makes for a fun craft activity for preschool children at school, art classes or home.

All you need is a paper plate and basic craft supplies and you are all set to make your very own “Eat Eat Frog Toy”. Have fun and learn too.

Paper Plate Rocking Elephant

As the saying goes "It's not how many toys you have, it's how much you play with the ones you have that help children grow & learn." In that spirit, we decided to create a toy-craft rocking elephant from a single paper-plate, creating a rocking motion toy for our tot to play with. Talk about achieving two objectives with a single effort - teach them to be creative and get them a toy for playing with later.

So, next time you are wondering about a new toy for your tot, think to make vs buy.

Happy toy-crafting!

Rainbow Formation Paper Plate Craft

Here comes a rainbow!

Teach kids how rainbows are formed by making this fun and interactive paper plate craft.

Rainbows are such fascinating phenomenon for kids and adults. They are formed when sunlight hits water droplets resulting in a spectrum of light appearing in the sky.

They paint the sky with the seven beautiful colors forming a huge arc in the sky. It is common to see rainbows whenever there is water in the air and plenty of sunlight - like for example around waterfalls or out in the open when it is rainy & sunny together.

RELATED >> POPSICLE STICK RAINBOW CRAFT

Craft explaining how rainbows are formed.

Using this craft, you can educate kids about how rainbows are formed. Tell them about the sunlight and then about the rain and then show them that when they happen together, rainbows are born.

Children will enjoy painting their rainbows and adding eyes and mouth to it. When the craft is completed, they will have a lot of fun making their rainbow appear and disappear.

Rocking Beluga Whale Paper Plate Craft for Kids

Our toddler's favorite character from the Disney movie 'Finding Dory' was Bailey, the beluga whale. She loved him so much that the first thing she wanted to do on a recent visit to Chicago was to head straight to the Shedd Aquarium and watch the Beluga whales.

We all loved Bailey with his "oooooooo" echo-location voice. He was indeed a charming character in the movie. Our toddler visited the beluga exhibition three times in one visit and left the aquarium only after she had her own beluga fur toy to take home!

Dad Child Crawl - Father's Day Craft

Dads love their children and children love their dads. It's the perfect play combination when dads get to be childish again and children get, well, a playmate whose sole objective is to entertain them.

Thinking about the upcoming Father's Day, it was great to be reminded of one of the most symbolic and fun child-dad activity - the horse-crawl - with daddy playing the crawl-horse and the child sitting on dad's back as the horse-rider. This sure brought back memories of laughter and joy in our own family.

Solar Eclipse Craft

What an exciting day it was in the United States today! A total solar eclipse was visible in a band of land across the entire contiguous United States from the Pacific to the Atlantic coasts.

This one has been called the "Great American Eclipse". Thanks to NASA for the live streaming of this iconic event, I could watch it at home with my toddler.

We created this craft later so my little one could also understand what was really going on and what the big deal was all about. It seems she understands now so mission accomplished.

How to make solar eclipse craft with preschool kids?

This is a simple STEM project for preschool and kindergarten kids. Science becomes so much fun and easy when explained through the crafts.

Sometime back, we made this Airplane Craft stem project which is very popular on our blog.

Easy science project for kids

What's a better way to teach kids about an airplane than let them build one? Also, this interactive Calendar Craft was another easy STEAM activity to teach kids about the relationship between date, day and month in a simple, playful manner.

We went to Kauai (The Garden Isle of Hawaii) for our toddler's second birthday and fell in love with the place. The spectacular Na Pali coast, lush green drive to Ke'e beach, majestic waterfalls and beautiful beaches were the key attractions for us.

But, for our toddler, Kauai's feral chickens were of utmost interest. You can find roosters and hens with a brood of chicks literally everywhere in Kauai.
