How To Make Paper Lantern Craft

Fall kicks off the festival season. We got thinking about how to welcome the festivals and create crafts to celebrate them. We thought “what’s common across the two big festivals - Christmas and Diwali”? And, the answer came back “lights”! Interesting isn’t it?

Lights are such a huge part of celebrating major festivals. So, we made the paper lantern craft or paper luminaries using paper, popsicle sticks and some mandala art.

These days, we are reading Curious George books. This series of books tells the story of a monkey called George who is very curious and his adventures with the Man with the Yellow Hat. All the stories are wonderful and never fail to amuse my daughter. She is becoming quite a fan of little George. We are always looking out for Curious George books on every library visit. So far we have read Curious George goes campingCurious George learns the alphabetCurious George Flies a Kite, Curious George Librarian for a Day, Curious George Dance Party, and Curious George in the Snow.

Just in time for Christmas, we found this lovely book “Merry Christmas Curious George”. It’s a story about how excited and curious George helps the man with the yellow hat pick out the holiday tree and then does a fun decoration with the kids at Tree Decorating Party in the hospital.

Inspired by the book, I asked my daughter - Do you want to have a tree decorating party? Yeah, she said. This gave me an idea to make Christmas tree ornaments for the fun 10 days of Kid-Made Christmas series we are participating in. To add extra fun, we used aluminum foil for making these trees.

Who doesn’t love a book by Dr. Seuss? Whether it’s Cat in The Hat, Fox in Socks, What pet should I get and so on..

Almost every parent has introduced their kids to reading using Dr. Seuss books. Books like Dr. Seuss ABC and Hop on Pop are great to introduce alphabets/basic phonics and the rhyming nature of these books make it fun to read aloud. These books have super fun and engaging illustrations.

If you looking for a book for Christmas, I would strongly recommend ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’. It’s an all time Christmas classic book for kids written by Dr.Seuss on how the effects of the Christmas spirit will grow even the coldest and smallest of hearts. It has a great message encouraging kids to grow their heart by doing good things and discover the true meaning of this holiday.

My daughter loved reading this book, so we decided to make this cute and easy Grinch Ornament for Christmas. We love to recycle stuff at home for craft projects. For this recycled craft, we decided to use disposable plastic spoons we have been saving. Plastic spoons make a great craft material. Did you check our Spoon Angel Christmas Ornament and Spoon Bats we made last year?

Wish you all a very happy Grinch-mas in advance!

Flower Lamp Craft

Today is the Indian festival of lights (Diwali). It is said that Diwali is celebrated in honor of the return of Lord Rama from exile of 14 years after defeating evil demon Ravana. To honor and celebrate the return of the beloved hero and triumph of good over evil, people illuminated the path by lighting diyas (lamps).

To celebrate this auspicious day, my daughter and I made these beautiful flower shaped lamps to decorate our home. It is such a simple Diwali craft to make, my daughter had a great time painting the flower lamp and decorating it with lace.

Two-year-olds have infinite energy and engaging them in festive crafts is a great way to teach them about the festival while helping them develop their creativity and keeping them away from the screen.  Try it out - we now have beautiful lamps to celebrate this festival of lights.

Wish you all a very happy and prosperous Diwali!

Masking Tape Art Christmas Ornaments

Kids enjoy the most when they are allowed to be freely creative (i.e. mess around without worries).  Won't you agree?

A few months ago, we made this abstract art on canvas A Beautiful Mess using the masking tape technique (also called as tape resist art). The best thing about this technique is that it allows little ones to play freely with colors and in turn amaze you with their creativity.

So this time we decided to make our Christmas craft using the same masking tape art technique. And, they came out beautifully!

Lo and behold, here are our beautiful Christmas baubles.
